ANNOTATION

Popular Economics Press is a non-profit group motivated by the belief that people have to know what's happening in the economy--and why--before we can know what to do about it. The book begins by answering the title question of "What's happening to our jobs" with five points: "We're losing them", "They're dangerous", "It's hard to get ahead", "We need democratic unions", and "they treat us like machines." The book is then formatted with five chapters, each responding to one of these issues: 1. Roots and Remedies of Unemployment 2. Health and Safety 3. Upward Mobility 4. Organizing 5. Worker's Control Each chapter has an abundance of cartoon-like illustrations, and almost every page attempts to tackle a new question relating to the economy, employment, safety issues, and racial and gender inequalitites. Examples of these are "Why do we have recessions", "White immigrants made it - why can't blacks?", and "What did the Taft-Hartley Act do?" The book attempts to consicely and clearly answer often complicated and complex economic and social questions.
