ANNOTATION

This trainers handbook has the objective of promoting participatory methods useful to human rights education facilitators. Earlier versions of this manual have been published under the title of "The Bells of Freedom," originally conceived in 1996 for Ethiopian use by the Action-Professionals' Association for the Peoples (APAP) in the Amharic and Afar Oromo languages. The methodology used in this book relies heavily on Paulo Freire's "Pedagogy of the Oppressed," as well as the values framework developed by Betty Reardon in "Teaching for Human Dignity." The manual begins with an overview of Human Rights and Human Rights Education, outlined in two sections entitled "Why Promote Human Rights Education?" and "How We Facilitate Human Rights Education." The body of the book is comprised of the 24 exercises, divided into the following four parts: I. Respect For Dignity and Fair Rules II. Links Between Human Rights and Responsibilities III. Seeking Justice by Using Analysis IV. Righting Wrongs Each exercise begins with the importance of a particular right, an its prominence in the world scene. There is then bulletpointed "objectives" for the exercise, followed by "procedures", "materials" needed, and an outlined "sequence." The manual concludes with an evaluation. There are also appendixes mixed into the text, supplying resources to accompany the various exercises (such as The UN Declaration on the Elimination of Violence Against Women for exercise 20, "Privacy Versus Rights Against Domestic Violence").
