This book is a manual for building democracy. It contains the stories of many people across the United States who are creating democracy at the grassroots by their actions, activities and campaigns. At the same time the books is a handbook of activities to assist individuals and groups examine the meaning of democracy and the skills necessary to rebuild a democractic nation. Beginning with an analysis of the "Myths about Public Life" the book provides tools for understanding, creating and advocating for a "Living Democracy" based on relational self-interest and relational power. It also develops the "Arts of Democracy" both through a series of workshop activities as well as in stories gleaned from traveling and visiting people's grassroots projects across the Unitied States.
