ANNOTATION

This book was written by a close associate of Paulo Freire who was brought to the Philippines in 1984 to work with a group of community organizers to re-evaluate their popular education work. While the book focuses on technical and theoretical aspects of the work and is a dense read, it is an incredibly valuable contribution not only to the history of popular education in the Philippines, but also for analyzing the limitations to certain aspects of popular education. Through a process which was designed by the participants' themselves, the history of popular education is analyzed in connection to the political realities in the Philippines. The book summarizes the history of how a combination of Saul Alinsky and Paulo Freire's ideas came to be the dominant popular education method during the 1970's. The finding of the participants was that the popular education model was limited for several reasons including it's reliance on empiricism, a sole focus on pragmatism, and lack of theoretical/analytical skill development. The failure of the popular education model was also given within the context of the changing political climate in the Philippines. This book would be useful for educators who wish to examine some of the difficulties of popular education, particularly the ongoing challenge to link popular education to radical social change. It is especially helpful in examining the changing role of popular education with the increase in globalization, including the contradictory nature of NGO's (non-governmental organizations) and their impact on building or holding back movements.
